Weekly Adult Bible is every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.

This fall the bible study will focus on Matthew for Everyone Part One and Part Two

This year, we will be reading and discussing the Gospel of Matthew using biblical scholar, N. T. Wright’s commentary Matthew For Everyone. The class will be led by the rector, Skip Windsor.

The Gospel of Matthew was written to fledgling Christians in the first century who wanted to know who Jesus was: Teacher. Healer. Prophet. The Christ. Matthew was a Jewish tax collector who became one of Jesus’ disciples. The gospel forms the connecting link the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament of its emphasis on the fulfillment of prophecies.

Matthew’s Gospel contains The Sermon on the Mount and the Lord’s Prayer. It contains stories such as Jesus stilling the storm, feeding the 5000, telling the parable of the Mustard Seed, and entering Jerusalem with scores of palm waving disciples. We come to know better major biblical characters better, such as Mary and Joseph, John the Baptist, Peter and John, and Mary Magdalene and Pilate.

Above all, through Bible study, we come to know how the biblical narrative of Jesus’ life relates to the story of our own lives. More than literature, the Bible, and Matthew’s Gospel in particular give us a sense of right living, ethical behavior, and a deeper understanding of our Christian faith.  Jesus was, and is, many things to many people both yesterday and today. Through discussion, reading N. T. Wright and reflection, Wednesday Morning Bible Study affords the opportunity to learn from one another and to have a deeper understanding of the Sunday morning Gospel readings.

Classes are conducted in the Memorial Room weekly starting at 10 AM and concluding at 12 Noon. The first class begins on September 14. Copies for purchase of N. T. Wright’s commentary are available through the church office.
