- St. George’s Award Presented to Bob Chase
-
-
On March 19, Christ Church was honored to present (see photos) to Robert E. (Bob) Chase, a former parishioner who many of us remember vividly, the St. George’s Award of the Episcopal Church. The St. George’s Medal is a national recognition acknowledging exemplary contributions by an adult in the spiritual, physical, mental and moral development of youth through service to the Church and through a national youth agency, in this case the Boy Scouts of America.

Bob was brought up in Needham. As a youth he was a member of Christ Church. He and his wife Gratia continued to be leaders of the Church until they moved to Maryland in 1999. Bob was for many years a Sunday School teacher and a member of our Vestry. He and Gratia served in leadership positions on the 1994 committee commemorating the Church’s anniversary. They continue to visit us about twice a year when in Needham.

Bob became a legend as Scoutmaster of Needham’s Troop 10 of the Boy Scouts. While his children were young, Bob led their Cub Scout pack. Later, with the Scouts, he presented a stimulating program that caused the troop to grow substantially. He served on the Scout District Council for several years, and continued his Council work later in Maryland.

Christ Church and Boy Scouts have been of great importance to Bob Chase during his entire life. His commitment of time and energy to both has been extraordinary. Many parents of his Scouts attended the service of March 19. We are fortunate to have been able to honor him.
